Another extremely informative session! Dr. Mike Silverman, Chair of the Virginia Hospital Center Emergency Medicine Department, provided updates on the hospital’s experiences, observations and recommendations regarding COVID-19.
- Update on Covid-19 Cases. There has been a significant decrease in hospitalized COVID-19 patients since the third week in April. This past week, the largest decrease (about 1/3 drop) was observed. The hospital is averaging 68 hospitalized COVID patients per day.
- Don’t Ignore Serious Medical Issues. Dr. Silverman urged those with non-COVID related medical issues (especially heart, stroke, abnormal abdomen pain, or serious injury) to come to the ER to get the care you need. You are safe. VHC has a very low rate of positive COVID cases amongst their staff. PPE is working. We are safe. You will be safe too.
- What to Expect when Visiting the Hospital. The hospital has adequate PPE to care for its patients in a safe environment. They have the capacity to triage and admit and treat you. When you arrive, you are screened for COVID-19 and are given a face mask. The triage team are all wearing PPE masks and. The rooms go through an extensive cleaning process, including the negative pressure process to clean the air in the room. There is also a no visitor policy to reduce the chance of spread. Don’t forget your cell phone and a charger so you can communicate with your family.
- Do not Become Complacent. Coronavirus is still out there. As we enter into re-opening business and work environments, it’s extremely important to continue social distancing, to wear a mask, and practice good hand washing hygiene. If you are sick…stay home! Make the best effort to wear a mask and go wear others are wearing masks. Finally, utilize telemedicine visits, if able, to reduce your risk and the risk of others in the doctor’s office.
- Rely on Good Data. Remember, as testing becomes more available, the number of positive cases will rise. We may also see an increase as a result of phased re-openings and current large gatherings. It’s important to rely on good data, such as Johns Hopkins and Mayo Clinic, to gain an accurate picture.
